Flowers and Butterfly

Defenders of the Dictionary is a co-op, mission-based board game that reimagines classic word games.

Team up with 1-4 players, ages 8+, to defend the dictionary for 30-45 minutes per game.

We were bored with surface-level, cards-only, and copy-paste party games, so we made something original that cuts deeper with a wacky clever player device. You have to physically connect your device, like a usb dongle, finding somebody you disagree with to score points. This creates a fun and casual spark at the table which helps you host a great party or game night.

Catch the Villains!

In the city of Wordopolis, there are villains threatening the future of language with oversimplifications, deletions, autocorrections, and odd interferences. The villains are designed to bring creativity to the word-building genre of games forcing you think outside of your normal word-building brain. Are you up to the challenge?

Mission-based Gameplay

Cooperate with your team to navigate the city of Wordopolis via letter-and-grid-based wordplay. Play through 24+ missions facing puzzles and obstacles on your journey. Your objective is to capture all the villains plaguing Wordopolis and each villain introduces a new interference.

Cooperative Word-building Gameplay

The fun of classic word-building is remixed into a cooperative setting. Each player has their own bag of letters and must decide which letter(s) to add to the shared word-building board. The collective wisdom at the table is responsible for finding and playing the best word.

Benefits of Cooperative Word-building

Cooperative word-building smooths out differing levels of word-building mastery making it great choice for families, spouses, and even word-building experts. This system even works smoothly with players outside of their native language.

Familiar Ideas Evolved

The game takes inspiration from classic word-building gameplay that you know and love, and it pushes beyond. Each mission introduces new game mechanisms or combines them to keep your team challenged for every mission. To keep the experience fun for all, each mission has multiple challenge levels catering to families, gamer groups, and even expert word-builders.

Placement > Points

While points matter, the placement of words and navigation of the city is what often takes priority. Score your team’s points at the end, but only if you’ve covered the “Points of Interest” required to pass the mission.

Great for Serious or Casual Groups

The mission-based campaign was designed so you can play with the same group, different groups, or even solo while still continuing your progress. Each mission includes a pass/fail objective and challenge objectives keeping the game fun for casual or serious groups or even can be adjusted on the fly.

Novel Theme

Language, as we know it, continues to change. As evidence, Merriam-Webster added 690 words to the dictionary in September 2023 alone! This symbolizes a healthy language that continues to expand with new ideas and culture. Language is awesome!

Will you help defend the dictionary and stop the villains of Wordopolis from messing with our beautiful language?
